Matisse Quilts

Matisse was an artist who came from generations of weavers, and who often painted fabric. When he was 81 and in a wheelchair, he turned to collage as a medium, cutting directly into painted paper and arranging the shapes. It was a synthesis of line and color, and it revolutionized the art world.

In this class, you will pick a Matisse cut out that speaks to you, and adapt it into a quilt. We suggest a crib size. In the first class, you will work with samples and graph paper provided by the shop to create a mock up, learning from Matisse about color and composition. In the second class, you will learn applique techniques that make the finished quilt look as spontaneous and joyful as the experience of making it.

Matisse said, "There are always flowers, for those who want to see them".
